To install ATI AMD Catalyst driver installer in Ubuntu/Linux Mint open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

After installation open Dash and open "AMD Catalyst" installer.

GNU was designed to be a 100% free-of-cost and open-source operating system, and is often used hand-in-hand with Linux. While many in the Linux community are cheering, Free Software Foundation founder and GNU creator Richard Stallman says this is unethical.
Stallman objects to non-free software on the basis that the coding for games like Half Life and Left 4 Dead is closed-source, meaning that users aren't technically allowed to modify the game's code at their pleasure. He also objects to the paid software on the basis that it is not free.
These two facts, says Stallman, mean that anyone who runs Valve's games on their computer, do not have freedom of computing. Stallman does admit that when game makers like Valve develop for the Linux platform, it can be a good thing for "spreading the word" about the system. But he remains adamant that the adoption of closed-license software will bode no good for the future of GNU/Linux.

Ubuntu team announced the availability of the final release of Ubuntu 14.10 and all other derivatives, Ubuntu Mate is not official derivative yet: The final release of Ubuntu 14.10 Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products. This release includes images from not only the Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products, but also the Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Ubuntu Kylin, Ubuntu Studio and Xubuntu flavours. Utopic final includes updated versions of most of our core set of packages, including a current 3.16.x Linux kernel, AppArmor improvements, oxide, and many more.
New fixes and features for Unity desktop, Firefox is updated to version 33 and Chromium is updated to version 38. Gtk updated to version 3.12. Qt updated to version 5.3. Other apps LibreOffice 4.3.2.2; Thunderbird 33; Nautilus 3.10; Evince 3.14; Rhythmbox 3.0.3; Unity 7.3.1. Support for IPP Everywhere printers is added, and printers shared from Ubuntu can emulate IPP Everywhere printers. IPP printers require no configuration under Ubuntu. Enable Laptop Mode and other tweaks to improve battery for Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid/14.10 Utopic/14.04 Trusty/12.04/Linux Mint 17.x/17/13/and other related Ubuntu derivatives

Managing battery power in Linux since kernel 3.x is bit difficult, many users face quick battery drain in Linux than other operating systems. There are tools available to manage power of laptop to improve battery life, previously I wrote improve battery with TLP power management. Now I burought other tools for you to improve battery life, if TLP doesn't fit to your needs. This script does all tweaks automatically within your system.

First of all the most popular utility Laptop Mode Tools which saves power by spinning down hard drives, and in addition, it can be configured to tweak all sorts of other power-related things. The core feature of Laptop Mode Tools is that it controls the "laptop mode" feature of the Linux kernel. In addition this tools can tweak things like readahead settings, hard drive power management settings, CPU frequency scaling settings, CPU throttling settings, DPMS settings, terminal blanking settings, and LCD brightness settings. It also supports various other power management features, such as starting and stopping daemons depending on power mode, automatically hibernating if battery levels are too low, and adjusting terminal blanking and X11 screen blanking.
Second tweak is to stop access to HDD for log files. If you are in single user system, probably you don't need log file like when this directory/file was accessed last time.
Third tweak is about to create virtual ram (swappiness), so whenever ram is out of space system is going to use virtual ram. This allows system to use all memory when memory is full use virtual ram, so in this case system won't bother your HDD.
Forth tweak is about to create ram drive for temp filesystem. This tweak moves temporary files from HDD to RAM then system won't hit HDD for temp file. The system touches HDD the more we save battery.
Fifth tweak is a utility called indicator-cpufrequency, It allows user to set specific amout of CPU to system or CPU on demand. In such a way it can help user to save battery by using 'power on demand'.

Dual GPU Tweak:
This tweak is only for those who has dual GPU in their Laptop. If you are not using other GPU for example Nvidia, AMD Catalyst, you can disable them in order to save battery.
So there is an open source program written in java. It disables discrete GPU which is not in use to save battery time.
This is a java program that allows the user to simply install acpi_call kernel module via graphic Interface, and also provides an useful script that automatically recompiles the kernel after each update.

Program features:
  • Install the acpi_call kernel module (kernel would be recompiled automatically after each update).
  • Deactivate discrete GPU.
  • Automatically deactivate discrete GPU on every boot.

Ubuntu 15.10 Wily could be exciting release for many users, since it has new application packages and features. Ubuntu team is heading towards great way by doing great work and impresses its user base, unlike previous releases this release got some new features and improvements. Unity 8 is not replaced yet and hopefully won't be in 16.04 either but still Unity 7.3.2 is much faster, responsive and many other things for release info checkout this post. Tweaks/Things to do after Install of Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander

Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy is just released today, Ubuntu team has done really great work there aren't much new features in this release but many current features and issues improved in 13.10 saucy. So we can say canonical focused on stability of Ubuntu desktop. Unity is much much faster, responsive and a lot of things added like smart scopes, anonymous dash searches and many more. After a lot of digging to this release I was wondering what tweaks should we do with this release and than it will be completely ready to use for us. So tweaks work has been done by me and brought for you, after applying these tweaks your desktop will be complete. All tweaks has been tested by NoobsLab, So if you encounter any problem feel free to ask us. Lets start tweaking to 13.10 ...

1: Tweak Tools:

Gnome Tweak Tool is well-known powerful tweak tool, With this tool you can manage your Ubuntu environment like: Change theme, icons, fonts, cursor and so on options.
Unity Tweak Tool is a configuration tool for the Unity Desktop, providing users access to features and configuration options not (obviously) accessible, and brings them all together in a polished & easy-to-use interface.

2: Synaptic and Compiz (CCSM) with extra plugins:

Synaptic is a graphical package management program for apt. It provides the same features as the apt-get command line utility with a GUI front-end based on Gtk+.
CCSM, short for CompizConfig Settings Manager, is a configuration tool for Compiz Fusion. It is used to configure the many plugins included in Compiz and Compiz Fusion, as well as the use of various profiles and intergrating better with existing desktop settings.

To install Synaptic Manager and CCSM enter following commands in Terminal:
Go to Dash and Search "CCSM" or "synaptic"


3: LightDM Tweaks

Remove White dots: If you want to remove white dots from login screen of Ubuntu 13.10.
Disable Remote Login and Guest account is enable by default in Ubuntu, It means anybody can login with guest account in your Ubuntu and remote to any computer.

To remove white dots, enter following commands in Terminal:

Save and close file, Now Restart to see effect.


4: Improve Unity Performance, Remove Online Search Lenses:

If you don't like online searches in Unity, You can disable it from Settings -> Privacy then Turn off online search.
Alternatively you can remove online search lenses from Unity, Following commands will remove Music, Photos, and Video lenses and make Unity much responsive:


5: Disable overlay Scrollbars:

You can disable overlay scrollbars, if you don't like that.
Enter following command in terminal to disable overlay scrollbar:

If you want to get back overlay bar, enter following command:


6: Show username on panel:

UserName is disabled by default in Ubuntu, So here is tweak you can enable it very easily.

To remove name from panel, Enter following command:


7: Disable System Crash Reports:

If you are experiencing something crashes in your Ubuntu, and you don't like to be notify with reports. You can disable them easily.
Enter following commands to disable crash reports:
Now text file will open, In the last line you will see "enabled=1" change it to "enabled=0". Save and close file.
Now enter following command in terminal to stop apport service:


8: Firewall for Ubuntu:

Linux don't need Anti-virus but Firewall is important for any kind of Operating System. UFW is installed by default in Ubuntu but it is command line and disabled by default. You can install best firewall GUFW enable and manage it graphically.
Enter following command in terminal to install firewall:
After installation open Dash and Search "GUFW" to configure it.


9: Move Minimize, Maximize, Close Buttons to Right:

If you are used to use these buttons on right side then this tweak is useful for you. You can move Minimize, Maximize, and Close buttons to the right side.

10: Install tested drivers for your Hardware:

Ubuntu works perfect with latest hardware, It is better to use drivers offered by Ubuntu. You can choose best drivers for your hardware from additional driver and can enable/disable from there easily.
Open Dash and Search for "Software & Updates" Here you can find "Additional Drivers" in the last Tab.


11: Install Adobe Flash Plugin:

Flash player isn't available by default , So you can install flash player easily from Ubuntu repositories.

12: qBittorrent Torrent client:

The qBittorrent project aims to provide a Free Software alternative to µtorrent. An advanced and multi-platform BitTorrent client with a nice Qt4 user interface as well as a Web UI for remote control and an integrated search engine. qBittorrent aims to meet the needs of most users while using as little CPU and memory as possible.
Enter following command to install qBittorrent:


13: Integrate online accounts in Ubuntu

Ubuntu has Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo, Hotmail and other accounts support. It offers you different features of your online account within Ubuntu desktop. Go to Settings > Online Accounts and configure accounts.


14: Plugins for Rhythmbox (Like Equalizer):

Rhythmbox is default Audio player in Ubuntu 13.10, You can install plugins for rhytmbox. Plugins are: Audio-read, Album-art-search, Countdown-playlist, plugin-cover-art-browser, Equalizer, Jump-to-Playing, Jump-to-Window, lyrics, micro-blogger, open-containing-foler, radio-browser, Random-album-player, Remember-the-rhythm, repeat-one-song, rhythm-web, send-first, small-window, stop-after, suspend, tab-guitar, tray-icon, web-menu, stream-ripper

After installation open Rhythmbox and Go to "Edit" -> "Plugins" and enable plugins.


15: Install Restricted Extras:

There are some Restricted extras in Ubuntu which can't be install while installation of Ubuntu by default but you can install these Restricted extras by yourself. Restricted mp3 playback and decoding, support for various formats, fonts, java, flash plugin, lame, dvd playback.


16: Codecs and Enable DVD Playback:

If you are multimedia user and use Ubuntu for multimedia then these codecs are very useful for you. You can install them by single command.

17: Compression/Decompression tools:

You can compress and decompress 7z, zip, gzip, rar, xz, tar, bz2, xar, tar.gz, tar.bz, and many others.
