If you want to do in this way and its works for you, that's good and as your wish.
When I use your script then I need to confirm to install xbmc. Maybe you can change that. Then you need to change this line "sudo apt-get install xbmc" to "sudo apt-get -y install xbmc"
Thanks! Worked like a charm!
Great !
Merci beaucoup

Hi Umair,
I am totaly new to Ubuntu. I have 11.10 and insatlled XBMC as per your above description. After installtion, XBMC opened but froze. Had to force shut down.Then after loggin, the desktop froze with onle the wallpaper.After waiting long i again forced shutdown.Could open XBMC after again restarting, but my screen was going black and then back to display. And my system went suddenly slow.
I've Zotac AD02, AMD Fusion E-350, 8 GM RAM, 320 HD.Hooked up with my 42" LED TV ( I've already checked the display resolution setting for screen going black etc). Couldn't see XBMC in App list to remove. Now even browsing in FF also the screen sometimes goes full black and then back.
Can you please help.
@Anonymous
your system is perfect, I think there is no problem in your pc.
There shouldn't be a problem, i don't know Why it's not working well for you.
Now remove again xbmc and install it again.
When installation complete Restart your pc and run xbmc.
If it stuck again when you close it, wait for it. again run xbmc.
You can contact me personally, i can check by team viewer
The install went without a glitch! Thanks you guys!!!
Hi Umair,
Like i said i could not find XBMC in list of APPs to remove.From software centre i typed XBMC but showed nothing in the INSTALLED tab but only 3 hidden files. When i clicked to show them, i saw four folders with XBMC as prefix to the long file names. I clicked on one - "XBMC Re..."(don't remember now) and selected remove. It went on for quite long and could see few files in the last HISTORY TAB-removed.
Not sure if thats the right way to remove it. Like i said i am newbie.
I'll try to again reinstall like you suggested else will have a session through teamviewer. How do i contact you? I can give my email here if its allowed. I'm in Canada near Toronto. Hope we do not have any time difference.
Thanks,
BM
@Anonymous

Hi,
thanks for the install. It worked some days for me but now (probably after some ubuntu 11.10 updates) the video library is empty and I cannot change or ad any source, since the option is not offered any more as it was initially > only empty screen when selecting video.
I try a re install and found some errors<;

it will work perfectly.
hi there, I have tried running your script but it keeps stopping on the ttf-mscorefonts-installer EULA and I can't seem to find how to progress past this. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.
sorry I didn't think to use goggle first and just found out I need to use Tab+Return lol

@Joe Wilson
I don't understand, what you want to ask?
Please be specific
Amazing. This was the easiest ever. Really appreciable.
The script works perfect but,
XBMC crashes for me on Ubuntu 11.10 64bit using Gnome3.
Sorry, the last time I tried I crashed the hole system
and had to reinstall.What I could find is that XBMC still
use some 32bit libs which conflict. I hop this will be fixed
one day.My Video driver could also be a problem because I
have to use Ironhide to get 3D to work.
Hi Umair,
I am new to ubuntu and linux; Tried your procedure to install, it seems in my system it wasnt able to install certain packages. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 live USB version. Below is the message I see after the process in complete. I might be doing something wrong, but not sure what; could you please help out?

I think the problem is live Ubuntu, If you want to use XBMC you need to install Ubuntu first.
But there shouldn't be any problem with this. I really can't understand why it's occurring with your live Ubuntu.
Install Ubuntu 11.10 than install XBMC hope it will work perfectly.
Hi Umair,
Installed xbmc in ubuntu and everything is running fine except it freezes while exit/shutdown. It just hangs there with the big mouse pointer in centre.Being new to linux dunno how to close it and i go for force shutdown. Any idea why it is so and any layman way to close it. I have my kids watching cartoons and terminal is not for them. Googled and found this issue was long there in earlier versions too but could not find any solution.
Thanks,
@Anonymous
just restart your Ubuntu and run XBMC.
If not work than i think you need to wait for exit/shutdown XBMC.
I don't why it's happening with you.
On my Ubuntu first time same thing happened but after restart it was working perfectly.
Hi Umair,
I waited for about 1 hour once and about 30 min few times to let it exit/shutdown on its own. Nothing happened except had to force shut or restart. Guess there is no way out.Even the CPU was fine running @ 15% so i do not think its something else occupying xbmc busy before exit/shutdown.
I guess its a bug in xbmc.
@Anonymous
I think you should try XBMC on Ubuntu Live.
Boot to live cd and install it.
Check it there, if it's working well than you need to re-install Ubuntu.
the link in that skydrive was not downloadable..
please fix this as i don't know how to install it the other way..
Link updated.
Enjoy
Hi Umair,
Where do i get VAAPI for xbmc. Am running it on ATI card and cpu usage is high as of now.
Thanks,
@Anonymous
Your mean VAAPI decoder?
Actually i can't understand what you want to ask, Please explain some thing.
Send me contact form from top "Contact us" tab.
@Anonymous
Run XBMC in Ubuntu Classic and Check CPU usage, Maybe high usage cause of Unity
Thank U very very (very) much!
Thank You it makes much easier. Finally someone who is smarter then the rest of us comes to rescue.
A bug in this build:
I get the error in XBMC gui:
"failed to initialise audio settings".
At command line:
"Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
All audio works fine on desktop and even XBMC menu sounds. Error only occurs when playing media in XBMC >~350MB.
I use ATI graphics, I don't know where NVIDIA came from.
your skydrive link is broken, I can't download it
@Anonymous
It is working, I have checked it.
If you can't download from skydrive just enter the given commands in terminal.

Download the file from skydrive and install from there
Thanks, and by "Download the file from skydrive and install from there"
you mean:
Download this file from our SkyDrive Link and make the file executable.
Just follow steps:
When file downloaded go to (Downloads) folder and select the file.
Right click on file and select the properties.
Click on Permissions tab and there tick the (mark Allow executing file as program).
Now open Terminal (Press Alt+F2 and type: gnome-terminal) and copy the following command in the terminal:
./Downloads/medibuntu-restricted-extras-xbmc-installer.sh
I get the same result...
@Anonymous
I don't know why it's happening to you, It works fine for me.
Having problem in connecting my Andriod mobile to XMMS in Ubuntu through bluetooth. Though, this might be ubuntu specific problem.
Any help?
Unfortunately method 2 didnt work for me. After a normal looking installation, when I start XBMC it crashes and Mint 12 shows some login screen.
With method 1 I get stuck at the third bullet. It says:
...
Connecting to www.medibuntu.org|88.191.127.22|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
Any suggestions?
Same issue at last post using method 2. Install appears to go fine but on start there is a crash and drop back to the Mint 12 login screen
Crash log says "Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault."
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 18)
@Anonymous
1st method work perfectly with Linux Mint 12 and Ubuntu 11.10, Try 1st mehtod hope it will work perfect for you.
Connecting to www.medibuntu.org|88.191.127.22|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
You can skip that step, it is for installing medibuntu, but is included by default in Mint 12 Lisa.
1st method works perfectly @ Mint 12 Lisa, 2nd doesn't, xbmc keeps crashing and returning to login screen.
Finally... it works... I installed Fedora can't find XBMC in repo first.. then tried XBMC live cd... can't connect with my cheap wireless NIC.. ubuntu gave me stupid errors and finally this works.. thanks
Thank you!!! Worked perfectly...
Worked wonders here as well, very strange that they do not have this on their official wiki.. well well thank you! :)
Thank you!!!
>> Method 2 to Install XBMC with Official PPA:
I from Russia)
I got xbmc installed fine, but whenever i try to play a video it closes xbmc and sends me back to my desktop. Any idea why this is or how i can fix it?
@Anonymous
Install all codecs in Ubuntu.
See this topic Mplayer with codecs
Also install Restricted extras on Ubuntu
@Umair
I installed the codecs and the restricted extras, but im still having the same problem. every time i play a video it closes on me. any other advice?
@Anonymous
remove and re-install again by following command:
sudo apt-get autoremove xbmc
tried that, it still isnt working. :(
@Anonymous
It is working perfectly for me,
Try on different distro Download ubuntu/Mint ISO burn on Flash, than boot live and install xbmc and check.
sorry for the dumb question, but where can i find a different distro? I got this straight from the ubuntu website, its my first time using linux.
@Anonymous
Again download from Ubuntu site burn to flash and boot live than install xbmc and check
check different videos format on xbmc.
Hi Umair,
not all advices seems correct. on top, the sentence 'XMBC install medibuntu and restricted extras' I have to put in query. it didn't do with two tries.
I installed 11.10 from CD from scratch. XBMC hangs after opening a mkv container-video.
when I installed "nathan-renniewaldock/xbmc-stable" ... I had to install MPlayer and "restricted extras" manually.
can somebody extend the manual here?
after that all works smoothly - so thanks at least ;-)
joerg
Great! First method that works!
Just run on a fresh install and updated version (03/02/12)
Worked fine with Method 1 first time.
Cheers.
Had problems installing. Got XBMC to run, but it crashes on exiting. Updating system produces this error: W: GPG error http://ppa.launchpad.net maverick Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available.
Anybody have a suggestion as to how to get XBMC installed correctly on Linux Mint 12 64-bit?
The key I need is 6D975C4791E7EE5E. Tried to add the key using the command below, but the server time out repeatedly. XBMC crashes my system on exiting and I can't install updates without this key.
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 6D975C4791E7EE5E
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
I just did a fresh install of Lisa and tried method 1. XBMC still jumps to login screen right after start =( Does anyone have a solution for this problem?
@Anonymous
logout and select from gear and check
The second method worked fine for me. I just think the command: "sudo add-apt-repository" is backward. Shouldn't it be "sudo apt-add-repository"? I did it that way and was fine.
Thanks
Seems to be working with the script but then it asks "0 upgraded, 27 newly installed, 0 to remove and 358 not upgraded.
Need to get 50.6 MB of archives.
After this operation, 121 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? yes
Abort."
as you can see when I type Y or Yes it aborts. what am I doing wrong?
@Jon
Whenever you are in this situation "just close terminal and open new one".
I hope it will work
didnt work for me. just got some weired cryptict error message like usual when using ubuntu.
@Anonymous
On Which distro you are installing XBMC?
Have you tried both method?
What errors you are getting in terminal?
Thnx Umair for XBMC PPA for Ubuntu 12.04
you are awesome man
I get this errorNot working for me...

Post updated XBMC for Linux Mint 12 Lisa installation.
Enjoy
@ Umair
Hi !
Many thanks : worked perfectly for my beloved lil' LM 12 Lisa !
Thanks for all, cheers !
Thanks!!! very easy to install with your instructions. ubuntu 12.04 XBMC Dharma 11.0 PRE (unstable). very happy here!!
What is the difference between method #1 and method #2? I am getting ready to put is on 64-bit Ubuntu 11.10, so I want to make sure I am going the best route.
What is the difference between method #1 and method #2? Also, are these methods friendly to the 64-bit version of 11.10?
@watari-kashi Jedi
Method # 1 with maverick ppa you can install xbmc on ubuntu.
Method # 2 with oneiric ppa you can install xbmc on ubuntu.
Yes it will work on Ubuntu 64bit.
I think you should choose method # 2.
I get the same error as another poster here. When I try playing any video, XBMC crashes and gives me:
At command line:"Failed to open VDPAU backend libvdpau_nvidia.so cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.
I've installed all the codecs and Ubuntu extras. I'm on Linux Mint 12, and have a Radeon HD6450. I think it might be the problem, because the error is talking about Nvidia...any ideas?
In this case open Movie Player, Go to Edit->Preferences. Now in Video Output Enter xv and close it.
I think your problem will be solved.
If not then you need to check your graphic drivers.
