Vertex Icon Theme is designed for Vertex GTK theme, it is still in beta development mode and doesn't have all icons but still looks good. Since this theme doesn't offer wide variety of icons for applications, so you need to install Moka icon theme for application icons, if you don't install Moka icons then theme will automatically use Gnome icon theme. You can even use Faenza icon set with Vertex icon theme, simply open '/usr/share/icons/Vertex-Icons/index.theme' file as root and find this line "Inherits=Moka, gnome, hicolor" and replace with this one "Inherits=Faenza, gnome, hicolor", you don't have to set Faenza icon theme just install it and set Vertex Icons from Tweak Tool. If you encounter any issue with this icon pack then submit issue here. You can use Unity Tweak ToolGnome-tweak-tool or Ubuntu-Tweak to change icons.
