RPCS3 is an open-source Sony PlayStation 3 emulator written in C++ programming language and development of this emulator began on 23rd May, 2011, RPCS3 was founded by programmers DH and Hykem, it is available for Linux and Windows released under license GNU General Public License Version 2 (June 1991). It currently supports modern Vulkan, Direct3D 12 and OpenGL graphic APIs. The emulator is capable of booting and playing hundreds of commercial games. With time more and more games are becoming closer and closer to either booting or full play-ability.
Initially it was able to successfully boot and run simple homebrew projects and later on that made public release of the emulator in June 2012. Today RPCS3 is dubbed one of the most complex video game console emulators of all time with an endless goal to effectively emulate the Sony PlayStation 3 and all of its aspects.

RPCS3 is stable enough to boot into games and play many of them with ease. Stability is more of a per-game factor that may change with new builds as new features get implemented. The RPCS3 emulator currently support keyboard / mouse inputs and native DualShock 4 controllers. As well as support XInput and MMjoy based controllers.
In the current state of the emulator, you can't run Play Station 3 game disc directly because PS3 discs are formatted in a very special way that can only be read with an actual Play Station 3 console. You can dump your own PlayStation 3 games and software from your own console. It is the most efficient and safest way to migrate your disc-based games and digital games from your console to your PC.
