Making notes is an essential part of life of a responsible person, if you are a student, teacher, or professional and you use Linux then you may not find applications that are famous among other OS users but it doesn't mean unpopular applications can't compete. Today we are going to showcase some good note taking applications which are going to help you and are available for Linux as well. So you can write notes and increase your productivity, well there are online services who offer taking notes but you may don't want to use them. And no we are not going to talk about sticky note here. Lets Start making list what we have! Shall we?


1: Notes

Notes is a great note taking application designed to look like Mac notes, it's free and sits on your computer which means you don't have to be connected to Internet to use this application. You can create as many notes as you want and quickly find note using instant search 'search at the speed of light'. Auto save features keep your work safe, if in case power goes out or something terrible go wrong and PC gets shutdown then you don't have to worry because whatever you wrote it was automatically saved. It is cross-platform and available for Linux, Mac, and Windows. Also there are keyboard shortcuts available for this application which makes user experience a lot better.

2: Simplenote

Simplenote is a free and lightweight note taking application which requires you to register to their service and start using it. This is cross-platform application available for Linux, Windows, Mac, webapp as well as apps for mobile. It saves your notes in your account and keep updated across all your devices, you can find your notes using search instantly or by using tags, it also keep backup of your notes in case you lose or change and want to go back you can do so. Unfortunately there is no deb build for 32bit/i386 architecture but 64bit/amd64, there is source available.

3: nvPY

nvPY is a simple note taking application which keep a way of taking notes simple but doesn't look better. It is also inspired by Mac application called "Notational Velocity". nvPY offers a straightforward and easy to use interface for creating, editing, managing and syncing, notes stored in your Simplenote account. Or simply you can use this application for your offline notes. It is available via Ubuntu software center so you can use just a single command to install it.

4: WizNote

WizNote is a cloud based notes solution which help user take notes and share with team members. It is cross-platform available for Linux, Windows, Mac, as well as mobile devices. It sync notes across all your devices, you can create, edit and view your notes on any of your device anytime. All WizNote servers are cloud based with multiple copies synced, you don’t need to worry about data loss at all.

5: FromScratch

FromScratch is a little note taking application that allows you to use as a quick note taking or todo application, it is cross-platform available for Linux, Windows and Mac. It saves automatically, no need to save manually; does automatic indenting; replaces common syntax with symbols, such as arrows.




6: Zim Desktop Wiki

Zim is a concept of wiki for desktop, it can be used as text editor as well as note taking application. It saves every page as a plain text file with wiki markup. You can link pages to each other, simple formatting, add images and whatever you do it saves automatically. Various plugins provide additional functionality, like a task list manager, an equation editor, a tray icon, and support for version control. So we can call it an advanced note taking application, if we see from that perspective.

RedNotebook is a modern diary and journal available for free under the GPL license, which is more powerful and offers many features than other note taking apps. It lets you format, tag and search your entries. You can also add pictures, links and customizable templates, spell check your notes, and export to plain text, HTML, Latex or PDF. The data is stored in plain text files, no database is needed; Links and mail addresses are recognized automatically; Automatic saving; Word Clouds with most often used words and tags; Backup to zip archive. Translated into more than 30 languages.

8: QOwnNotes

QOwnNotes is the open source (GPL) plain-text file notepad with markdown support and todo list manager, it is cross-platform available for Linux, Windows and Mac. You can also integrate QOwnNotes with Owncloud and make most out of it. Notes are stored as plain-text files on your harddisk, it also allows you to sync them between your devices using Owncloud and Dropbox. It is a rich feature note taking application which offers markdown highlighting and markdown preview mode as well.

9: Tagspaces

TagSpaces is an open source personal data manager, it is cross-platform available for Linux, Windows, Mac as well as mobile devices, it is free released under AGPL license. It helps you organize files with tags on every platform. TagSpaces is running completely offline on your computer, smartphone or tablet and does not require internet connection or online registration. You can still use platforms like ownCloud, Dropbox or Bittorrent Sync in order to sync your files between devices. Apart from note taking, this application can be used to organize your photos, recipes or invoices in the same way on every platform.

10: Laverna

Laverna has a simple and robust markdown editor, which can help you write faster than ever before with our live markdown preview. The editor can be switched to distraction free mode where you can focus solely on writing notes. It also allows you to make your notes available on any device with your Dropbox & RemoteStorage account. You can make your notes available only to you by enabling encryption. It is free released under MPL-2.0 license and don't require any kind of registration.
