Inkscape is a free and open-source professional vector graphics application, it is cross-platform available for GNU/Linux, Windows and Mac. You can use Inkscape if you are either professional or hobbyist designer, using this software you can create wide variety of graphics such as illustrations, icons, logos, diagrams, maps and web graphics. Inkscape uses the W3C open standard SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) as its native format.

Its interface is somewhat similar to CorelDraw and similar drawing programs. There are rectangles, ellipses, text items, bitmap images and freehand curves. As an added bonus, both vector and bitmap objects can have alpha transparency and can be arbitrarily transformed. It supports multiple opened files and multiple views per file. Graphics can be printed and exported to png bitmaps.
If you are used to Adobe Illustrator then you may find this application easy to use, since it does the same job. It can import and export various file formats, including SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, PS and PNG. It has a comprehensive feature set, a simple interface, multi-lingual support and is designed to be extensible; users can customize Inkscape's functionality with add-ons.
