Install Linux Mint Mate Desktop On Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot
The GNOME 2 Fork 'Mate' is a desktop environment that is used in Fedora 16 replacing Gnome 3. If you wish to use this desktop environment on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot to replace your current Unity or Gnome Shell interface, then follow the instructions given below.
>> We need first to add the main Linux Mint 12 repository to your repository list. So, open the Terminal (Press Alt+F2 and type: gnome-terminal -or- Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and run this command to edit /etc/apt/sources.list:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
At the end of the file add this line:
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ lisa main upstream import
Save your file and close.Now run the following commands in the Terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linuxmint-keyring
To install the GNOME 2 Fork 'Mate' desktop, Run following commands in the Terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mate
Log out the current session, and at the login screen, select MATE, then login normally:

This is pretty cool, actually. If I'm not mistaken, MATE came from some random ArchLinux user. That's crazy! It's such a huge deal in my eyes!
Even Linus Torvalds was saying to the public that he wished someone would fork Gnome2. Here it is! Have you seen the latest DistroWatch stats? LinuxMint has overtaken Ubuntu by over 400 hits per day. I think the availability of a pre-installed fork of Gnome2 may be the culprit. I wonder if Canonical will come to the same conclusion?
One thing to be aware of is that when you install the packages via the Mint 12 repository it'll replace /etc/lsb-release to reflect LinuxMint. I've had problems with Synaptic because of that change and if you edit /etc/lsb-release to refect Ubuntu 11.10 it'll change right back to LinuxMint. /etc/update-motd.d also has it's files changed so be careful!
Thanks now i cant get into synaptic, software-centre, or software-sources, new method needed
@Anonymous
What you can't get into Synaptic/Software Center?
If you're talking about it's installation, This method works perfect. I tried it today.
Please guide me how to remove dis now?
@Kush Patel
Enter These following commands to remove this:
sudo apt-get autoremove mint-meta-mate
sudo apt-get remove mint-meta-mate
Thank you Umair !
thanks a lot Umair
Tutorial works fine, but my Software-Center don't start anymore. In Terminal I get this: «ImportError: No module named LinuxMint»
Do somebody know how to fix this?
Umair,
I've haven't been running Linux for very long, however I'm usually able to figure things out. I followed these instrux to a T and I got the following error upon reboot:
There is a problem with the configuration server
(/usr/lib/MateConf/mateconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)
Surprisingly, I find no other instances of a sanity check error when installing Linux Mint Mate/OO. Is it possible that I'm the first person this has happened to? My only option is to boot into recovery mode...
Do you know what's causing the error and more importantly, how do I fix it?
Sahir
I have tried this tutorial today and i have installed mate successfully.but after rebooting,my ubuntu software center does not start anymore.and synaptics is working fine.plz anybody can help me how to fix this problem.
@Ramesh Katkam
Go to the following Topic for Ubuntu Software Center:
Ubuntu Software Center for Linux Mint
I am on Ubuntu 11.10. A fresh install done this morning. I too get a "sanity-check-2 exited with status 256" error when starting MATE. So I went back and looked at what happened when I installed the mint-meta-mgse.
$ sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mgse

mint-meta-mgse is already the newest version.
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mint-meta-mate : Depends: python-mate-desktop but it is not going to be installed
mintmenu : Depends: python-mate-desktop but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

So it looks like MATE won't start because of this conflict. What is the proper way to proceed from here to resolve the conflict?
@Steven Davies-Morris
Download the following package and install:
ftp://tridex.net/repo/ubuntu/pool/main/p/python-mate-desktop/
and enter the following command in Terminal:
dpkg -i python-mate-desktop_1.1.0-1_amd64.deb
Rather than using the Mint repository, it's just as easy (and much cleaner!) to use Mate's repository directly:
http://wiki.mate-desktop.org/download#ubuntu
This should avoid any nasty conflicts with Mint.

This is known bug in launchpad, but these commands will fix your problem I am pretty sure.
Enter following commands in Terminal:
sudo apt-get remove xserver-xorg-core
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg-video-intel
After I run these commands,I rebooted.I selected the proper way to boot Ubuntu,the screen goes blank.Then I boot into recovery mode,this has taken me to text based terminal screen to login. It is like the terminal screen when goes with Ctrl + Alt + F1. yesterday i edited the grub file and added nomodset to quiet splash somewhere in file.Looking forward to your reply
