Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial is an exciting release for many users who prefer to use LTS version, it has new application packages and features. Canonical is trying to improve Ubuntu by time and seems they are succeeding, unlike previous releases this release got some new features and improvements which I had shared in previous post. Unity 8 with Mir is not replaced yet but it will be available for testing in 16.04 Xenial, Unity 7.4 is much improved, faster, responsive and many other things for release info checkout this post. It's been a tradition now that whenever a new Ubuntu version come out users look forward to tweak it or smooth some rough edges and somehow to make their experience much better with Ubuntu, I am not trying to say Ubuntu isn't perfect 'for sure it is' but a user like me may need some other things to be done after a fresh install and make it much better than any other OS available out there. Everything shared below is tested and works fine, so hopefully you won't get any problem with them and if you encounter any problem feel free to ask. Lets start .....
The day has come, soon we are going to see Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial LTS around, every LTS is exciting but 16.04 Xenial and it's flavors made some special place in users heart. Soon Ubuntu team will announce the availability of final version of Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial and all other flavors. Ubuntu 16.04 will be supported for 5 years for Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Core, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin along with all other flavors, the final release of Ubuntu 16.04 Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products. Xenial Xerus final version includes most recent versions of core set of packages, notable changes: Linux kernel 4.4.x version; Ubuntu software center is replaced with Gnome software Center 3.20.x, Boot service: systemd, Unity 7.4.0 has introduced new features, many bugs fixed and online search (spyware) is disabled by default, Compiz brought various improvements, Firefox 45.x, LibreOffice 5.1.x, Gnome platform 3.18, GNOME Calendar 3.19.x, Thunderbird 38.x, Chromium 49, Rhythmbox 3.3.x, Deja Dup 34.1, Shotwell 0.22.x, Nautilus 3.14.3, GTK+ 3.18.9, most of the Gnome 3.18, Gnome System Monitor 3.18.x, Terminal 3.18.3, Gedit 3.18.3, Docker 1.10, Mesa 11.1.2, Xorg Server 1.18.x, Python 3.5, Golang 1.6, a new program QML-based USB Startup Creator, Pulseaudio is updated and latest versions for other applications.

How to Upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus from Ubuntu 15.10 Wily/14.04 Trusty LTS/any Ubuntu version


Warning: Backup your data. If your system has Upstart service and you are upgrading then after upgrade you must choose "Start using Upstart" from grub. And troubleshoot problem if you see any.

Graphical Upgrade:

This is the most easiest way to upgrade Ubuntu from any version to any latest Ubuntu Version. You can upgrade with just few clicks and rest of the process Ubuntu will do.

Step 1: Open "Dash" and Search for "Software & Updates" and open it.
Step 2: Disable all Third-Party repositories from "Other Software" Tab.

Step 3: Go to "Updates" Tab check box "pre-released updates" then move to the end of this window "Notify me of a new Ubuntu Version" Select "For any new version" and click ok, then close the update manager.

Step 4: Now start "Update Manager" again and Click on "Upgrade" Button. That's it


Command Line Upgrade:

Command line upgrade is a bit different way than GUI.

Upgrade to LTS Release from Normal:
If you are on normal version (Non-LTS) of Ubuntu and you want to upgrade to LTS version then simply follow these steps.
Enter following command in terminal to install Core Update-Manager:

Now enter following command to open release-upgrade file in text editor:

Now change normal to lts in opened text file
Prompt=lts
Use these commands to start the upgrade process:

Ubuntu 16.04, which is codenamed the "Xenial Xerus", is currently penciled in to release on 21rd April, 2016. The release date for Ubuntu 16.04 has now been firmed up as are the other development milestones leading up to the mid-April debut of this release, this will be 6th Long-term-support LTS release of Ubuntu, the very first LTS release was back in 2006. Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus (LTS) will use Unity 7 desktop and Linux Kernel 4.4 with updated applications, Ubuntu 16.04 will be a big focus on convergence, and many other changes planned for development over the next six months.

The schedule of the release of Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus with given dates are as follows:
  • December 31st - Alpha 1 (Not Public Release - opt-in)
  • January 28th - Alpha 2 (Not Public Release - opt-in)
  • February 25th - Beta 1 (Not Public Release - opt-in)
  • March 24th - Final Beta
  • April 14th - Release Candidate
  • April 21st - Final Release of Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus LTS
