A large selection of free PDF readers for Linux is available online, yet picking the best one is not an easy task at all.
Most people first think of Adobe Acrobat Reader, but despite its prevalence, there are some great alternatives to choose from.
Today, we are taking a look at Slim PDF Reader - a quintessential alternative to Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Slim PDF Reader is a lightweight, free PDF viewer popular among Windows users that now Linux enthusiasts can enjoy, as well.
It all comes down to the size and speed with this free PDF reader. Nonetheless, it offers some interesting features:
  • Customizable UI with dark theme support
  • A full range of advanced annotation options
  • Copy and snapshot tools
  • Various viewing options and navigation tools
  • PDF form filling and signature verification
  • Download size only 17.3 MB (Ubuntu and Fedora)
Let’s take a closer look at the main strong points of this free PDF reader for Linux below.

Simple & Modern UI

When it comes to the user interface design, Slim PDF reader deserves a 5-star rating.
The PDF viewer uses bright colors for the tools and options that provide a nice contrast against the background. It also comes with a nice, modern-looking dark theme suitable for working and reading at night.
On top of having an eye-catching design, the UI is easy to navigate around and requires minimal learning effort.

All viewing options are located in the bottom toolbar. There you can rotate pages, set the zoom level, search through the document, select viewing mode, and go to a specific page.
The top toolbar and the right-side panel are populated with the main editing tools. You can use these tools to make and save changes to your PDF documents.
In the left side panel, you can easily view page thumbnails, bookmarks, and attachments if there are any.

Watermarks, Comments, Attachments & More

If you often need to review and markup your PDFs, you'll be glad to know that Slim PDF Reader comes with 10 advanced and customizable PDF annotation tools.
Using the right-side panel, you can instantly add the following annotations: watermark, highlighter, attachment, link, strike-through, squiggly line, stamp, underline, and sticky note.

Simply select the desired tool, then place the annotation where you want it on the page. From there, you can reposition it if necessary and customize it using the options in the properties section.
On top of that, Slim PDF Reader enables you to fill out PDF forms, and check if a PDF with an attached digital signature was altered or not.

Copy and Snapshot Tools

Slim PDF Reader doesn’t offer advanced text and image conversion, but it comes with content extraction tools that other PDF viewers are missing.

The Copy tool enables you to select and copy a portion of PDF text to clipboard that you can paste into a browser for search or other applications for editing.

In the same manner, the Snapshot tool is used to create an image of a section of the document that you can then paste into an image processing app.

Final Words

Overall, Slim PDF Reader makes a very good impression. It is small, fast, and offers an interesting, feature-rich toolbox for a free PDF viewing tool.
If you need more advanced features such as PDF conversion, editing, and e-signatures, check out our review of Able2Extract Professional for Linux.

On 26th April, 2012 the most beloved version of Ubuntu was released "Ubuntu 12.04 Precise" Long-Term support version, I still remember and miss that day when it was released. I personally used it a lot after "10.04 LTS" and still I use it for productivity because it is stable has a lot of stuff available developed by community such as applications, themes, icons, 3rd-party scripts for it and so on.

Here we are in the last week when Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is going to reach End-of-Life for community (28th April 2017). So everybody is encouraged to upgrade to supported version of Ubuntu, if you are in the enterprise industry and 12.04 is doing some main operations and you can't upgrade then Canonical has got your back.
You can buy Extended Security Maintenance (ESM) from Ubuntu website and get support from Canonical which includes several features such as important security updates for kernel and user base packages (these updates will be delivered in a secure, private archive exclusively available for people who buy Ubuntu), 24/7 telephone and online portal support, Canonical Livepatch service, Access to knowledge base, IP legal assurance, a dedicated Canonical support engineer (these all features vary for prices - you can check further information at Ubuntu advantage).

What if you are running the Ubuntu 12.04 Precise and want to upgrade to 16.04 Xenial, well there is no way to upgrade to 16.04 Xenial directly from 12.04 Precise, you must upgrade to the Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty in the first place to get to the Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial. In case if you don't upgrade your OS then it means you are exposed to potential threats which may found later in the Kernel and OS, so there won't be any chance to get it patched unless you are super intelligent engineer and know what to do in such situation.

Benefits of upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 is that you get two more years of upgrades, since 14.04 Trusty will reach end-of-life in April 2019. Later you can upgrade to 16.04 LTS which is supported until year 2021. That's means you are not stuck in the box with your 12.04, I strongly recommend you upgrade as soon as possible for you and let it go.

In case you don't know or looking for instructions, here is the guide available to upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty LTS.
Happy upgrading.

Ubuntu Unity
Yes, indeed, you heard/read it right. A moment of silence for my and your feelings about Ubuntu on phones and desktop "convergence". Yesterday was 5th of April not 1st and it doesn't seem like a April fool joke. For sure I didn't see that coming and it is shocking to me as well.

Yesterday Mark Shuttleworth published a post on Ubuntu insights:
I’m writing to let you know that we will end our investment in Unity8, the phone and convergence shell. We will shift our default Ubuntu desktop back to GNOME for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
unity8

Further he wrote:
I took the view that, if convergence was the future and we could deliver it as free software, that would be widely appreciated both in the free software community and in the technology industry, where there is substantial frustration with the existing, closed, alternatives available to manufacturers. I was wrong on both counts.
I believe in future somebody will try to implement the idea of "convergence" again and those will be lucky. I still think it can be somewhat possible but you should have what it takes, and it takes a lot, which we community don't have; Resources and time. We always look forward to the new release and we expect them to make great things for us but on the user side we don't do a thing to make this OS better, like programmers can give some free time to contribute to the project or if you can't program donate something to the project or help in any other way but We Don't and I guess very few of us did, that's why we are seeing this great thing dying.

Reaction?

My reaction to see Unity8 dying is like 50/50, stuck between two emotions. I am happy and sad at the same time, we can debate on that. Why I am happy? Because now canonical can focus on desktop operating system and will make much better progress. On the other side, I am sad too because I loved/preferred Unity7 and was expecting Unity8 to be superior, desktop and mobile/tablet devices friendly but now non of these going to happen anytime soon.
When Canonical announced the Ubuntu Touch for mobiles and showed a demo, I was quite happy and desperate to get Nexus 4 as soon as possible and try early versions of Ubuntu Touch, at that time Nexus 4 was the only mobile you could get Ubuntu Touch working. I followed along the development of Ubuntu Touch and I still have Nexus 4 as my secondary phone which I bought only to use/experience Ubuntu Touch (checkout my very first video - in excitement I forgot to remove screen protector came with nexus 4) and I did try Ubuntu Touch on my Nexus 7 (2012) tablet as well in 2013. Good old days.

Solution?

Well some people can/will fork it. But still it is not possible to continue development without huge resources, time and motivation (which we community don't have - "I guess"). UBports is well known site for Ubuntu phone community and after the yesterday's news Marius Gripsgard posted on his G+ account "I will do my best to keep Ubuntu touch and Unity8 standing on both it's legs! It will be hard." Lets see how it goes and how long he can maintain these two projects, let the time decide, I can't give you false hopes.
I wish canonical continue the development of Unity7 for many years but Gnome is a great desktop and it is around from a long long time and continue to evolve, I used and loved it too. Lets not forget about other awesome desktops too: Xfce, KDE, Cinnamon, Mate, LXDE; we still have great options to choose from depending on our needs. Also Mr. Shuttleworth mentioned "We will continue to produce the most usable open source desktop in the world." I wish canonical and Gnome project work together to make Gnome much better, so we can love it.

Future?

Future of Ubuntu is still bright. Canonical will now focus on the desktop OS, cloud (LXD, Juju, MAAS, BootStack, OpenStack) and IOT (Internet of Thing) and Snappy technologies will make progress and get polished.

Since Ubuntu is switching back to Gnome desktop, we will see Ubuntu Gnome project going away, well in my point of view that's not a big deal, what's the point of keeping a standalone Ubuntu Gnome project when we're already getting Gnome as default desktop.

What will happen to MIR display server project? There are so many unanswered questions and I am looking for answers too.

Let us know! what do you think about this whole situation.
MyPaint is a free, open source, simple drawing and painting program for digital painters. It is way better and advanced than MS Windows paint, well the truth is you can't compare this great program with MS Paint. It lets you focus on the art instead of the program. You work on your canvas with minimum distractions, bringing up the interface only when you need it. MyPaint started in 2004 by Martin Renold, he wanted a smooth paint program which could help him digital painting with brush in different way to pressure and speed. MyPaint supports many graphics tablets such as Wacom, and many similar devices. The brush engine of MyPaint is versatile and configurable, and it offers useful, productive tools which a digital painter can expect from a program.
The standard brushes can emulate traditional media like charcoal, pencils, ink, or paint. But you don't have to limit yourself to just the standard ones. It's easy to make expressive, artful new brushes that don't respond like anything conventional. Fullscreen mode declutters the interface, leaving you with just your brush and your creativity. You can still reveal the tools you want, when you need them. This distraction-free approach means you can focus better on the art you make, not the tool you make it with. After three years of long time development, MyPaint reached to version 1.2.0 stable.

Features Highlight:
  • Designed for pressure sensitive graphics tablets
  • Simple and minimalistic user interface
  • Extensive brush creation and configuration options
  • Unlimited canvas (you never have to re-size)
  • Basic layer support

Are you using Ubuntu from a long time and you really miss those old days? Sam Hewitt has forked Elementary OS Gtk theme and icons to make it look and feel like old Ubuntu 8.04. It's all about old school brown-y orange-y themes and gave it a name "Humanitary" theme & icons, Gtk theme made using neutral grey & brown palette and icons using a neutral palette. Since this theme is intended to use in Elementary OS which uses Pantheon[1] desktop but you can use it in Ubuntu or Linux Mint if you are using Gnome Shell, As I tested Gtk theme is not compatible with other desktops. Vertex and Masalla icons used in the following screenshots. You can use Unity Tweak ToolGnome-tweak-tool or Ubuntu-Tweak to change themes/icons

There are plenty of free docks available for Ubuntu, here comes one with price tag. Developer of this dock asked me to checkout his application and I found it lightweight, fast, simple and easy to use dock, by using it you will get feeling of Mac OS X dock (used in Mac 10.6/10.7/10.8/10.9). You can easily manage files, folders and application on this dock.

NVIDIA is well-known company all over the world regarding gaming cards. Sometimes it is really difficult to configure manufacturer drivers for NVIDIA cards in Linux, there could be many reasons for this such as kernel upgrade, and so. By default Ubuntu use the open source video driver Nouveau for NVIDIA graphics card. This driver lacks support for 3D acceleration and may not work with the very latest video cards or technologies from NVIDIA. An alternative to Nouveau are the closed source unified NVIDIA drivers, which are developed by NVIDIA. This driver provides excellent 3D acceleration and video card support.

Release Highlights of 352.30 Drivers for Linux:
  • Added support for the following GPU: GeForce 910M
  • Fixed a bug that caused poor video post-processing performance in VDPAU when operating on a large number of video streams simultaneously.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause an Xid error when terminating a video playback application using the overlay presentation queue in VDPAU.
  • Updated nvidia-installer to avoid recursing too deeply into kernel source trees under /usr/lib/modules, mirroring an existing restriction on recursion under /lib/modules.
  • Fixed a rare deadlock condition when running applications that use OpenGL in multiple threads on a Quadro GPU.
  • Fixed a kernel memory leak that occurred when looping hardware - accelerated video decoding with VDPAU on Maxwell-based GPUs.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the X server to crash if a RandR 1.4 output provided by a Sink Output provider was selected as the primary output on X.Org xserver 1.17 and higher.
  • Fixed a bug that caused waiting on X Sync Fence objects in OpenGL to hang indefinitely in some cases.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented OpenGL from properly recovering from hardware errors or sync object waits that had timed out.
