Install Mint Mate Desktop 1.2 in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin

The GNOME 2 Fork 'Mate' is a desktop environment. If you wish to use this desktop environment on Ubuntu 12.04 Precise to replace your current Unity or Gnome Shell interface, then follow the instructions given below.

Changes and improvements in Mate 1.2:
  • Numerous bug fixes
  • All conflicts with GNOME were fixed
  • All configuration files were moved to ~/.config/mate
  • An undo/redo feature was added in Caja
  • Libmate’s mate-open command is now faster to open applications.
  • Mate settings daemon now supports the PulseAudio and GStreamer backends
  • New applications: mozo (alacarte fork), python-caja, caja-gksu, caja-image-converter
  • Artwork:
    • Mate themes were renamed to avoid conflicts with GNOME
    • A new MATE wallpaper was added
    • MATE now features its own icon

To install Mate desktop in Ubuntu open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

The GNOME 2 Fork 'Mate' is a desktop environment that is used in Fedora 16 replacing Gnome 3. If you wish to use this desktop environment on Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot to replace your current Unity or Gnome Shell interface, then follow the instructions given below.

>> We need first to add the main Linux Mint 12 repository to your repository list. So, open the Terminal (Press Alt+F2 and type: gnome-terminal -or- Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and run this command to edit /etc/apt/sources.list:




At the end of the file add this line:
 deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ lisa main upstream import  
Save your file and close.

Now run the following commands in the Terminal:







Log out the current session, and at the login screen, select MATE, then login normally:
