Clarity icons are light, modern & beautiful icon theme. It is based on famous Aw0ken and Token icon themes, lots of shapes and basic color pallete was taken from these icons. Creator also used some shapes from OpenClipart, Wikipedia, Humanity icon theme and ACYL icon theme. Most of other icons are also designed by simplifying existed icons/logos. Mostly icons are in monoshape, but some icons also have additional elements. This icon theme has 8 templates to build different colors icons, so I created all those colors and uploaded to our PPA, further more if you want different color then you can download and follow instructions to create your own customized color icon set. The eight variants available are as follows: violaceus (violet/pink gradient), lux_violaceus (glossy), canus (grey gradient), dark_canus (dark grey gradient), caeruleus (blue gradient), lux_caeruleus (glossy), viridis (green gradient), and luteus (orange gradient). This icon theme is compatible with Unity, Gnome, Xfce, Mate, etc. In following screenshots Ambiance Blackout and Flat were used. You can use Unity Tweak ToolGnome-tweak-tool or Ubuntu-Tweak to change icons.
There are many command line wireless scanner tools available for Linux, which requires command line knowledge to deal with them. Also there are some GUI tools available for Linux which scans wireless network around your wireless device like iwScanner, etc.
LinSSID is great application designed from scratch using C++, Qwt, and Qt languages, it is similar to iwScanner and Inssider (for MS Windows). LinSSID displays the information available from iwlist tool in graphical format. LinSSID displays a table of all of the local wireless networks that your device can receive, and information about them. It also displays charts of the signal strength of each network by channel number and over time. LinSSID will work with more than one wireless device attached to a system, but only one at a time (selectable).
LinSSID requires root privilege to run the iwlist tool. It can be run in one of two ways to do this. The preferred method is to launch LinSSID as a regular user and let it ask for a password. It will then use the password to get iwlist information, but LinSSID itself will not run with root privilege. Alternately, LinSSID can be launched with root privilege. This second method is less secure since any misbehaving code in the program could possibly have detrimental effects on the system.
It is multi-threaded, using the main thread to communicate with the main window and the user while a second worker thread keeps a named pipe filled with iwlist data. The program is in active development, so if you find any bug report it to the developer following this link.

FFmpeg is popular multimedia framework, that allows users to decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter and play pretty much anything that humans and machines have created. It supports the most obscure ancient formats up to the cutting edge. It contains libavcodec, libavutil, libavformat, libavfilter, libavdevice, libswscale and libswresample which can be used by applications. As well as ffmpeg, ffserver, ffplay and ffprobe which can be used by end users for transcoding, streaming and playing. It is a complete, cross-platform solution to record, convert and stream audio and video.
FFmpeg security is a high priority and code review is always done with security in mind. Though due to the very large amounts of code touching untrusted data security issues are unavoidable and thus developers provide as quick as possible updates to last stable releases when new security issues are found.
Since "Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty" FFmpeg is dropped and its fork adopted 'libav' which made a lot of application unusable under Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic/14.04 Trusty. In coming release '15.04' Ubuntu team decided to add FFmpeg again to its repositories, so there won't be such issues like we have with 14.04/14.10 but there are unofficial FFmpeg PPAs available for Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic/14.04 Trusty. Now unusable applications can be used again on Ubuntu 14.10/14.04 using FFmpeg and if you want to use FFmpeg from command line then follow this official documentation.

FFmpeg offers following functionality with libs:
  • libavutil is a library containing functions for simplifying programming, including random number generators, data structures, mathematics routines, core multimedia utilities, and much more.
  • libavcodec is a library containing decoders and encoders for audio/video codecs.
  • libavformat is a library containing demuxers and muxers for multimedia container formats.
  • libavdevice is a library containing input and output devices for grabbing from and rendering to many common multimedia input/output software frameworks, including Video4Linux, Video4Linux2, VfW, and ALSA.
  • libavfilter is a library containing media filters.
  • libswscale is a library performing highly optimized image scaling and color space/pixel format conversion operations.
  • libswresample is a library performing highly optimized audio resampling, rematrixing and sample format conversion operations.

You can also follow this guide to build from source.

There are two unofficial PPAs available to install FFmpeg in Ubuntu 14.10/14.04. A PPA by Kyrill offers packages for 14.10 Utopic and 14.04 Trusty/Linux Mint 17.1/17
To install FFmpeg in Ubuntu/Linux Mint open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

Another PPA offers FFmpeg packages for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty and 12.04 Precise/Linux Mint 17.1/17/13 (This PPA is also promoted on official FFmpeg website)
To install FFmpeg in Ubuntu/Linux Mint open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:
Note: This PPA is removed and now you cannot install ffmpeg with above PPA.

NVIDIA is well-known company all over the world regarding gaming cards. Sometimes it is really difficult to configure manufacturer drivers for NVIDIA cards in Linux, there could be many reasons for this such as kernel upgrade, and so. By default Ubuntu use the open source video driver Nouveau for NVIDIA graphics card. This driver lacks support for 3D acceleration and may not work with the very latest video cards or technologies from NVIDIA. An alternative to Nouveau are the closed source unified NVIDIA drivers, which are developed by NVIDIA. This driver provides excellent 3D acceleration and video card support.
If you are tired of compiling drivers and kernels then use xorg-edgers PPA to install latest drivers for NVIDIA graphics card and get high performance from your card. This PPA xorg-edgers is up-to-date among others and offers old and latest drivers for different kind of NVIDIA cards, which means you can choose to install what is best performing driver for your card. In latest drivers if you encounter any kind of issue, you can directly submit bug reports to NVIDIA, in order to fix that issue in future releases.
Nvidia Ubuntu

Release Notes for 352.30 & 346.16 drivers
  • Added support for the following GPU: GeForce 910M
  • Fixed a bug that caused poor video post-processing performance in VDPAU when operating on a large number of video streams simultaneously.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause an Xid error when terminating a video playback application using the overlay presentation queue in VDPAU.
  • Updated nvidia-installer to avoid recursing too deeply into kernel source trees under /usr/lib/modules, mirroring an existing restriction on recursion under /lib/modules.
  • Fixed a rare deadlock condition when running applications that use OpenGL in multiple threads on a Quadro GPU.
  • Fixed a kernel memory leak that occurred when looping hardware - accelerated video decoding with VDPAU on Maxwell-based GPUs.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the X server to crash if a RandR 1.4 output provided by a Sink Output provider was selected as the primary output on X.Org xserver 1.17 and higher.
  • Fixed a bug that caused waiting on X Sync Fence objects in OpenGL to hang indefinitely in some cases.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented OpenGL from properly recovering from hardware errors or sync object waits that had timed out.
  • Added support for the following GPUs: GeForce GTX 970M, GeForce GTX 980M
  • Fixed a bug that caused a blank screen when setting a mode requiring YUV 4:2:0 compression. These modes are not currently supported.
  • Fixed a bug that caused an incorrect DisplayPort link configuration to be displayed after a hotplug or unplug.
  • Added support for decoding VP8 video streams using the NVCUVID API on GPUs with VP8 hardware decode support.
  • Added support for the following EGL extensions: EGL_EXT_device_base, EGL_EXT_platform_device, EGL_EXT_output_base
  • Added the ability to increase the operating voltage on certain GeForce GPUs in the GeForce GTX 400 series and later. Voltage adjustments are done at the user's own risk. See the documentation on the "CoolBits" X configuration option in the README for details.
  • Added support for NVENC on GeForce GPUs. For more details on the NVENC SDK, see:
  • https://developer.nvidia.com/nvidia-video-codec-sdk.
  • Removed a sanity check in nvidia-installer that tested the availability of POSIX shared memory. The NVIDIA GPU driver has not required POSIX shared memory since release 270.xx.
  • Added accelerated support for r8g8b8a8, r8g8b8x8, b8g8r8a8 and b8g8r8x8 RENDER formats.
  • Updated nvidia-settings to take advantage of GTK+ 3, when available. This is implemented by building the nvidia-settings user interface into separate shared libraries (libnvidia-gtk2.so, libnvidia-gtk3.so), and loading the correct one at run-time.
  • Added the nvidia-settings option --gtk-library to allow specifying the path of the directory containing the user interface library or the path and filename of the specific library to use.
  • Added support in nvidia-settings for a GTK+ 3 user interface on x86 and x86_64.
  • Added the nvidia-settings option --use-gtk2 to force the use of the GTK+ 2 UI library.
  • Updated nvidia-installer to install a file in the system's xorg.conf.d directory, when a sufficiently new X server is detected, to cause the X server to load the "nvidia" X driver automatically if it is started after the NVIDIA kernel module is loaded.
  • This feature is supported in X.Org xserver 1.16 and higher when running on Linux 3.9 or higher with CONFIG_DRM enabled.
  • Improved the performance of nvidia-installer by enabling the use of parallel make when building the NVIDIA kernel modules. The concurrency level can be set with the --concurrency-level option, and defaults to the number of detected CPUs.
  • Updated nvidia-installer to determine default installation locations for libraries based on the presence of known paths in the ldconfig(8) cache and the filesystem, rather than hardcoded distro-specific paths.
  • Fixed a GLSL compiler bug that would produce corruption when running games in Wine.
  • Fixed the EGL_KHR_stream_cross_process_fd extension.
  • Fixed rendering corruption that sometimes happened when calling
  • DrawElementsInstancedBaseVertexBaseInstance(),
  • DrawElementsInstancedBaseInstance(),
  • or DrawArraysInstancedBaseInstance().
  • Dramatically improved OpenGL Framebuffer Object creation performance.
  • Removed the limit on the maximum number of OpenGL Framebuffer Objects.
  • Updated the NVIDIA OpenGL driver to prefer $XDG_CACHE_HOME over $HOME as the default location for storing the GL shader disk cache.

Screen Blanks/Monitor Turns Off (Geforce Go card)
Using a laptop with a GeForce Go card, or connecting the sole display via DVI on a dual-head system sometimes results in the screen not receiving a picture. This is caused by the driver outputting video to the VGA port on the graphics card, instead of DVI.
The usual hint that you have this problem is when you hear the startup sound but nothing appears on the screen. If you do not hear any sound, you are more than likely experiencing unrelated problems.
Switch to the console by using CTRL+ALT+F1, or reboot and select recovery mode from the GRUB menu.
Open and edit xorg.conf like this: sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Find the line that says: Section "Screen"
Insert a new line that says Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
Save the file. Use sudo reboot to restart your computer.

Uninstall Nvidia Drivers
If something went wrong after installation of NVIDIA drivers, then follow these steps to recover.
1-> Boot into recovery mode
If you don't see Grub (recovery option) just hold "Shift" before boot and choose recovery option
2-> Now in following menu choose "root"
3-> Now uninstall Nvidia drivers using commands:
4-> Now remove xorg configuration:
5-> Now Reinstall the Mesa package for GL:
6-> Now reboot

Mac OS (MBuntu) Transformation pack is ready for Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic/14.04 Trusty Tahr/Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca/17 Qiana
(Note: For best results use Unity/Gnome FallBack, and for previous Ubuntu versions link to posts are given)

Finally after a lot of work Mac OS X (Macbuntu Yosemite) transformation pack is ready for Ubuntu 14.10 Utopic Unicorn/14.04 Trusty Tahr. We could make everything automated but in this way you guys won't get how things done in Linux, so we kept everything semi-automatic and interactive. This pack contains themes for GTK (supports: Unity, Gnome, Cinnamon, Mate, and Xfce), two themes for Gnome Shell, one theme for Cinnamon, one icon theme, cursors, and boot screen. I collected some parts for themes from different sources (Cinnamon, Gnome Shell theme from Yosemite Shell, some parts from Zukimac) and Jared from ravefinity helped us fixing bugs in themes, and some icons also collected from different sources[1], docky themes are Ambiance and Buyi-idock. Following these instructions you can completely change look of your Ubuntu 14.10/14.04 to look like Mac. In previous pack we used LightDM webkit theme which was quite similar to Mac login screen, this time we are offering again but you have to use it on your own risk because many users reported problems last time.
Mac packs for Linux are almost stopped but we kept this project on our list from 12.04, and now we have reached to 14.10 with Mac transformation. Many people look on the internet for pre-configured Macbuntu 14.10/Mac4lin, Mac Ubuntu theme and so on, but it is good idea to transform it by yourself because if you want to go back to default look or want to change look you can do that easily.
Note: If you encounter any bug in theme/icons/any stuff, report to us with screenshot or problem with details.

For numerical computation, data analysis, usually Matlab software is used but it is not necessarily best software available. The main thing is that Matlab is commercial and expensive. Students of Machine learning always wondering what other alternative available for them that is powerful and can be free of cost, which means students don't have to spend their money on a proprietary software. I received a request from people who were looking for Matlab alternatives, so I decided to share with all of you, here are some best available alternatives to Matlab for Linux/Ubuntu/Linux Mint. These software are available in Ubuntu universe repository, also you can build from source if needed.

The days of the big mechanical cash register are long gone; even platen scanners are no longer considered a necessity for retail services, with big box retail chains like OfficeMax stores eschewing the glass and laser counter for a simple hand scanner. Many retailers already use Ubuntu or Linux operation systems for their point of sale (POS) systems due to the locked down security they offer, but for the most part this has been limited to large chain retailers with money to spend on a dozen POS stations at a time.
However, with the release of Ubuntu Touch 14.04, the winds of change may just be blowing in. As stated by developers—and reiterated in Ars Technica's review—the 14.04 is a "mostly stable" build of the Linux based mobile OS. It's not perfect, but the fact that it offers unrivaled security with the mobility and touch functionality of a tablet means this could be a contender for POS systems in small businesses everywhere.

Easy Checkout

According to the specs offered on the official site, Ubuntu Touch works on displays as small as 6.5 inches and as large as 20 inches, meaning that while buying a brand new tablet for just this purpose sounds like a great idea, most small business owners can probably get away with putting it on that Nexus 7 half the entrepreneurs of the world picked up last year to help manage their business better.

There are a plethora of apps, both free and paid, that can turn an Ubuntu tablet into a POS station, but with a five star rating on SourceForge and an update within the last 90 days, POSper is definitely the winner. This is a simple, easy to use touch-based POS app designed for use on a Linux OS—the touch-based functionality makes it seem that this one was designed specifically for Ubuntu Touch, but that's not even the best feature. POSper was designed specifically for small businesses, supporting an impressive range of hardware and databases to allow everyone who uses it to get the most out of every feature.

In spite of being free, POSper offers a number of features commonly only found in paid POS applications:
  • Ability to use multiple currencies (with programmable exchange rates)
  • Custom payment methods including "free" and "invoice"
  • Warning message when no payment type is selected (often even big retail POS systems simply do nothing in the case of this error, so this is an excellent feature for new users)
  • System warnings in plain English for new users
  • Printer templates with scale and margin features
With these simple must-have features available on a secure, stable and free system, what is it that's keeping Ubuntu Touch from becoming the clear choice for small businesses everywhere? As usual, it's a problem with plastic. At the moment the biggest hurdle to jump toward making a complete POS system for small businesses that works with a Linux operating system is actually the credit card reader. While there are plenty of readers that are compatible with Ubuntu and Linux, considering it's fairly popular with big retailers, they're a little pricey when it comes to individual sales.

However, retailers can rest assured that, as more small businesses get familiar with what a Linux OS can offer them in terms of security and ease of use, there's little doubt that Square and PayPal Here will offer compatibility before long.

A Full Retail Solution?

When it comes to small business retail, there are a lot of moving parts. While the POS terminal itself is extremely important to the daily operation of mom and pop shops everywhere, that's not the end of it. On top of needing a POS system and all related hardware, small businesses also need to make sure the checkout process is easy and inventory can easily be tracked.

Thankfully, those requirements have a single solution, and it's one that Linux can provide with ease: UPCs and other barcodes. Chances are you've already heard about the ZINT Barcode Generator, which offers easy creation of over 150 different barcode symbologies from UPCs to QR codes; this is one program that every small business that works with a barcode scanner could use, and it's designed especially for Linux.

ZINT Barcode Generator can also create USPS codes, making business easier for online retailers as well by offering simple shipping solutions. No more wasting hours in the post office every time a big order comes in! All you need is a Linux compatible barcode printer, like the ones offered by small business support company Shopify, and you're ready to get started.

Trust In the Future

Whether Ubuntu Touch ever catches on in small business POS systems remains to be seen. Considering the unrivaled security and ease of use, as the operating system becomes more streamlined in updates past the 14.04 you can expect to see it used more often in retail business everywhere. It may just change how small retailers do business, both from a cost perspective and when it comes to the go-to equipment.

Royal-Gtk is a modern flat theme with a combination of light and dark elements based on Numix. The original Numix theme modified to make more user experience better because it was too dark according to Sultan Al Isaiee. He did it for himself but then he shared his work with public.
Now this theme contains less dark colors, dark toolbar for Gtk3 apps, dark theme for GIMP and Qt Creator, new window controls (similar to OSX 10.10) and border-less Unity app windows. He modified this only for Ubuntu Unity but as I tested it can work under Linux Mint too. You can use Unity Tweak ToolGnome-tweak-tool or Ubuntu-Tweak to change themes.

Mint team released new version 2.4 of Cinnamon with new features and bugs fixes, new redesigned stuff, enhancements to the bottom panel, also include cinnamon setting manager. In version 2.4, and similar to MATE or Xfce, Cinnamon is an entire desktop environment built on GNOME technologies. It still uses toolkits and libraries such as GTK or Clutter and it is still compatible with all GNOME applications, but it no longer requires GNOME itself to be installed. It now communicates directly with its own backend services, libraries and daemons: cinnamon-desktop, cinnamon-session and cinnamon-settings-daemon. This new version will be featured in Linux Mint 17.1 “Rebecca” planned for the end of November and in LMDE 2 “Betsy” planned for Spring 2015.

Months back Pear OS developer created Syncdrive which was GUI for Grive, and its PPA was maintained by NoobsLab team. Unfortunately Pear OS has been sold and Syncdrive is no more supported, I received a lot of queries that it is not functioning anymore. So here is another unofficial great client for Google Drive, Grive command-line client was already available but the only thing 'GUI setup' was missing so thefanclub created Grive-Tools in order to made Grive setup easy for everybody. Basically it is front-end of Grive with some extended features. It has panel indicator and I tested it under these desktops: Unity, Mate, Gnome Classic, Lxde, and indicator doesn't work in other desktops Gnome Shell, Cinnamon, Xfce (I will report to maintainer).
